The focus of that event that attracted almost 400 people, mainly scientists, but also entrepreneurs and activists, was on shaping the <strong>future of the information society<\/strong>, on <strong>responsible science and technology<\/strong>, and on the <strong>concepts<\/strong> needed for such an intervention.<\/p>\n<p>The Bertalanffy Center was represented in several ways.<\/p>\n<p>Together with\u00a0Deering Health Associates from Washington the BCSSS organised a track on &#8222;<strong>Empowering patients through health IT<\/strong>&#8222;. <strong>Mary Joe Deering<\/strong> was an invited speaker. Deering had been involved in US President Obama&#8217;s initiative to reform the health care system (known as &#8222;Obamacare&#8220;) with the help of ICTs and talked about the potential of health information technology for empowering all parties involved in health care. <a href=\"http:\/\/sciforum.net\/conference\/isis-summit-vienna-2015\/paper\/2939\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read and download her abstract here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/1158d8e.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"1158d8e\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/1158d8e.jpg\" width=\"179\" height=\"179\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Mary Jo Deering<\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, ICTs impacts on society do not only foster the full human potential. The BCSSS held a workshop under the title &#8222;<strong>Homo informaticus<\/strong>&#8220; that gave a critical review of how information technology is changing our concept of what a human is. Fellow of the BCSSS, <strong>Felix Tretter<\/strong>, invited experts from different fields such as psychology, bioinformatics or political economy. <a href=\"http:\/\/summit.is4is.org\/programme\/tracks\/homo-informaticus-the-image-of-man-in-the-information-society\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">See the programme and abstracts here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/warp_35_20120602_1426208041.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"warp_35_20120602_1426208041\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/warp_35_20120602_1426208041.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Peter Fleissner, retired Professor, TU Wien, BCSSS Board Member, was one of the &#8222;Homo\u00a0informaticus&#8220; workshop participants<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The BCSSS co-organised in co-operation with the Leibniz-Soziet\u00e4t der Wissenschaften zu Berlin the track on &#8222;<strong>Emergent systems, information and society<\/strong>&#8220; that resulted in the establishment of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/research\/fields-and-groups\/emergent-systems-information-and-society\/\">Research Group at the BCSSS<\/a>\u00a0combining evolutionary systems thinkers in the tradition of Ludwig von Bertalanffy&#8217;s General System Theory and computer scientists as well as sociologists of information technology.\u00a0Invited speakers included physicist\u00a0<strong>Werner Ebeling<\/strong> who carried out studies on self-organisation in the then German Democratic Republic while Hermann Haken did so in the West, and a co-worker of Ebeling, <strong>Rainer Feistel<\/strong>. <strong>Klaus Fuchs-Kittowski<\/strong>, the <em>spiritus rector<\/em> of the group, drew a big picture spanning from a systems concept of information to dangerous technological developments such as drones in the military field. <a href=\"http:\/\/summit.is4is.org\/programme\/tracks\/emergent-systems-information-and-society\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Look here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/ebeling.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"ebeling\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/ebeling.jpg\" width=\"162\" height=\"162\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Werner Ebeling<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stefan Blachfellner<\/strong> who works as Managing Director at the BCSSS moderated another track: &#8222;<strong>Transforming systems through design<\/strong>&#8222;. The rationale for that topic is the confluence of social systems design with transformation studies \u2013 system interventions are attempts to design systems in order to transform them. This is a transdisciplinary task since whenever transformative design is required you have to take into consideration\u00a0technological\u00a0and\u00a0ecological\u00a0aspects of social systems besides economic, political and cultural aspects. Furthermore, design must be participatory. Among the invited speakers was <strong>Thomas Fundneider<\/strong> from theLivingCore GmbH. Only recently he was co-opted for the Board of the Bertalanffy Center. Architect <strong>Liss C. Werner<\/strong> from Berlin, member of the BCSSS, was another invited speaker.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/summit.is4is.org\/programme\/tracks\/transforming-systems-through-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">For invited speakers\u00a0abstracts\u00a0see here<\/a>. That track anticipated another BCSSS\u00a0Research Group \u2013 that on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/de\/programme\/socio-ecological-systems-and-design\/\">&#8222;Socio-Ecological Systems and Design&#8220;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/FitzpatrickG.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"FitzpatrickG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/FitzpatrickG-682x1024.jpg\" width=\"157\" height=\"236\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Geraldine Fitzpatrick, Institute for Design and Technology Assessment, TU Wien, talked as invited speaker at the &#8222;Transforming systems through design&#8220; track about technological support for the share economy<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/thomas-fundneider-150.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Thomas Fundneider, theLivingCore\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/thomas-fundneider-150.jpg\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Thomas Fundneider<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gerhard Chroust<\/strong> from the Johannes Kepler University Linz and\u00a0<strong>Marianne Penker<\/strong> from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna \u2013 both\u00a0BCSSS Board Members \u2013 volunteered as chairs for a paper session on <strong>&#8222;Natural Desasters&#8220;<\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/summit.is4is.org\/programme\/tracks\/natural-disasters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see here<\/a>). <strong>Rainer E. Zimmermann<\/strong>, BCSSS Scientific Council Member, organised a paper session on <strong>&#8222;The ethics of foundations&#8220;<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/sciforum.net\/conference\/isis-summit-vienna-2015\/isis-T8.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see here<\/a>).\u00a0<strong>Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda D\u00edaz Nafr\u00eda<\/strong>,\u00a0Universidad de Le\u00f3n, Spain, BCSSS Fellow, co-organised a discussion on <strong>&#8222;Weaving the understanding of information&#8220;<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/summit.is4is.org\/programme\/tracks\/weaving-the-understanding-of-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/marianne-penker-BCSSS.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Marianne Penker BCSSS\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/marianne-penker-BCSSS.jpg\" width=\"98\" height=\"138\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Marianne Penker,\u00a0Institute for Sustainable Economic Development,\u00a0University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Joseph Brenner<\/strong>, Member of the Bertalanffy Center and Corresponding Member of the International Center for Transdisciplinary Research in Paris, is Associate Director of the International Center for Philosophy of Information at the Xi&#8217;an Jiaotong University. In that function he co-chaired with the\u00a0head of the Center,\u00a0Professor of Philosophy, Kun Wu, the ICPI Stream at the Summit \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/summit.is4is.org\/programme\/conference-streams\/the-2ndinternational-conference-on-the-philosophy-of-information-icpi-2015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Second International Conference on the Philosophy of Information<\/a>. Its topic was the<strong>\u00a0&#8222;Integration of the Philosophy of Information and Information Science&#8220;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Another BCSSS Member,\u00a0<strong>Tom\u00e1\u0161 Sigmund<\/strong>,\u00a0Department of Systems Analysis, University of Economics, Prague, was in charge of sessions that revolved about the question <strong>&#8222;Emancipation or disempowerment of man?&#8220;<\/strong> focusing on the influence of ICTs on media, science, and education (<a href=\"http:\/\/summit.is4is.org\/programme\/tracks\/emancipation-or-disempowerment-of-man\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see here<\/a>).\u00a0Ludwig von Bertalanffy PhD Scholar <strong>Asimina Koukou<\/strong> from the Department of Communication, University of Vienna, moderated a session on <strong>&#8222;The governance of information freedom in crisis \u2013\u00a0Democracy, resistance and control&#8220;<\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/summit.is4is.org\/programme\/tracks\/the-governance-of-information-freedom-in-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see here<\/a>). She had a talk too in another track (<a href=\"http:\/\/sciforum.net\/conference\/isis-summit-vienna-2015\/paper\/2968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see here<\/a>). Two other Visiting Students at the BCSSS from China, <strong>Lin Bi<\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/sciforum.net\/conference\/isis-summit-vienna-2015\/paper\/2813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see here<\/a>) and <strong>Jian Wang<\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/sciforum.net\/conference\/isis-summit-vienna-2015\/paper\/2960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see here<\/a>), gave presentations in the ICPI stream.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Asimina_Koukou_BCSSS.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Asimina Koukou\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Asimina_Koukou_BCSSS.jpg\" width=\"98\" height=\"142\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Asimina Koukou<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>John Collier<\/strong>, Professor, Philosophy and Ethics, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa, keynote speaker at the EMCSR 2014 \u2013 he\u00a0was elected Fellow of the Bertalanffy Center in early 2015 \u2013 made more than one contribution. He has been dealing with information since long. His invited speech connected the information concept to an evolutionary systems concept and involved practical recommendations:\u00a0<strong>&#8222;Information dynamics, self-organization and the implications for management&#8220;<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/sciforum.net\/conference\/isis-summit-vienna-2015\/paper\/2983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert K. Logan<\/strong>, Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, an evolutionary systems thinking expert\u00a0whose many publications on information and information technologies build upon General System Theory tenets, introduced the first invited speaker, Terrence Deacon. Logan was expected to give the last invited speech on the ship and deal with social systems (<a href=\"http:\/\/summit.is4is.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/logantext.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see here<\/a>). However, he was unable to do that for family reasons. After the Summit Logan joined the BCSSS. He was elected Fellow. He will work in the Research Group\u00a0&#8222;Emergent systems, information and society&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Another member of the BCSSS, <strong>Yagmur Denizhan<\/strong>, Professor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey,\u00a0delivered an invited speech on education and teaching. The title of her contribution was\u00a0<strong>&#8222;Tools and their users&#8220;<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/sciforum.net\/conference\/isis-summit-vienna-2015\/paper\/2930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/yagmur.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"yagmur\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/yagmur-300x198.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Yagmur Denizhan<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The General Chair of the Summit was <strong>Wolfgang Hofkirchner<\/strong> in his function as outgoing President of the ISIS. In his opening speech he addressed the imperative of the global age \u2013 <strong>&#8222;Information for the Global Sustainable Information Society&#8220;<\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/summit.is4is.org\/streams\/Audimax-Opening-Session.mp4?id=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video<\/a> (starting at 1:00:00) | <a href=\"http:\/\/sciforum.net\/conference\/isis-summit-vienna-2015\/paper\/2990\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">abstract and presentation<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>ISIS Secretary General, <strong>Robert Jahn<\/strong> \u2013 another member of the BCSSS \u2013 was in charge of the local organising committee.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the Summit &#8222;The information society at the crossroads \u2013 response and responsibility of the sciences of information&#8220; was deliberately chosen as continuation and concretisation of the last EMCSR&#8217;s theme &#8222;Civilisation at the crossroads \u2013 response and responsibility of the systems sciences&#8220;. The summit showed that the concerns of the systems view can successfully be extended to a different field and a different community.
