{"id":9199,"date":"2015-10-05T17:45:14","date_gmt":"2015-10-05T15:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.bcsss.org\/2015\/the-turing-machine-model-and-natural-computation\/"},"modified":"2015-10-05T17:45:14","modified_gmt":"2015-10-05T15:45:14","slug":"the-turing-machine-model-and-natural-computation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/de\/2015\/the-turing-machine-model-and-natural-computation\/","title":{"rendered":"The Turing machine model and &#8222;natural computation&#8220;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Gordana-201407-IMG_4439-1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Gordana-201407-IMG_4439-1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Gordana-201407-IMG_4439-1.gif\" width=\"288\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gordana Dodig-Crnkovic<\/strong>, member of our recently established <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcsss.org\/research\/fields-and-groups\/emergent-systems-information-and-society\/\">Research Group on Emergent Systems, Information and Society<\/a>, will visit Vienna and give a talk on\u00a0<i>A Taxonomy of Computation and Information Architecture<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The question is how the turing model of computation relates to self-organisation of natural systems: Are they different or do they have something in common?\u00a0Mrs.\u00a0Dodig-Crnkovic\u00a0contends the position that &#8222;the Turing model of computation presents only one aspect of computation in the real world&#8220;, of &#8222;natural computation&#8220; that is &#8222;intrinsic to physical systems, and particularly cognitive computation in cognitive systems&#8220;. Together with Mark Burgin, a mathematician from the UCLA, she sees &#8222;the Turing model of computation as a basic mechanism that can be used to build more complex computational architectures, which in combination with interaction with the environment (learning) give advanced information-processing behaviors in cognitive systems&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>The talk\u00a0fits well the scope of the Research Group: How can computer science issues be approached from a systems theoretical angle?<\/p>\n<p>The talk is held on <strong>Tuesday, 13 October,\u00a02015 , 16:15\u201317:45, at the\u00a0Heinz-Zemanek-Saal, OCG (\u00d6sterreichische Computer Gesellschaft), Wollzeile 1, 1010 Wien<\/strong>. The event is open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs.\u00a0Dodig-Crnkovic is\u00a0Professor of Computer Science at M\u00e4lardalen University and Associate Professor at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, where she is Vice-Dean for doctoral education at the Department of Applied Information Technology.
