In the framework of the 90th anniversary of designaustria at the designforum, MuseumsQuartier Vienna, on 1st December 2017, Stefan Blachfellner, Managing Director of the Bertalanffy Center for the Study of Systems Science, was invited to moderate and bridge the perspectives of Christian Maryška, author and curator at the Austrian National Library, who illustrated in his talk “designaustria im Zeitraffer” the historical view, and Florian Pfeffer, international curator, designer and author, who talked about “Die neue Rolle der Gestaltung in einer veränderten Welt” with his future-oriented design perspectives.

Blachfellner invited the celebrants to reflect on the systemic impact of design, especially on the social fabrique, as design enhances values through its syntax, semantics, and patterns, creating meaning and technological solutions and nudges users into intentional behaviour. Thus design, designer and distinguished design communities like designaustria may have more political responsibility than they themselves perceive.

Over the course of the event Stefan Blachfellner was invited to become a Full Member of designaustria in 2018. We hope to start a value-creating collaboration between the design and the systems science community connecting the dots, weaving an enhanced net of interests, insights and personal relationships, thanks to our BCSSS member and designaustria board member, Martin Fößleitner, too.

designaustria represents the Austrian design scene on both national and international levels, seeking to highlight its achievements. It raises awareness for Austrian products and services and thus contributes to strengthening Austria as an industrial location. As a platform, designaustria encourages discussion and opens up new possibilities for designers. The commitment of every single individual counts: “We design Austria”, which resonates with the commitment of the Bertalanffy Center, too.
